The two main factors to consider when looking at the damaging affects of music are how intense the music or noise is, and how long you are exposed to it. With exposure of 85 dB or greater, over time will cause a permanent hearing loss. If you are in fact a musician (or fan), a level of 85 dB is not particularly loud. Many sounds you hear on a day to day bases do reach an 85 dB level. Even though it is not very loud, it is still loud enough to damage your hearing permanently. But, it also depends on how long you are exposed to it. Studies have found that the maximum exposure each week should be less than 85 dB for 40 hours.
Taking that into consideration, a rock concert is well over 100 dB and can reach as high as 120 dB. Anyone exposed to that environment is at high risk of losing their hearing.
